Barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians,
electrologists, and nail technicians all fall under the supervision of the Board
of Barbers and Cosmetologists in Montana. There are a multitude of services that you can receive in a
salon. How do you keep yourself
safe?
For starters, make sure that the person
working on your hair, skin, or nails is licensed specifically in that practice.
The biggest example of salon workers stepping outside their scope of
practice is a massage therapist doing wraps or scrubs.
In order to work on the skin, a person needs an esthetician’s license.
Right now massage therapists are not licensed at all (the state is hoping
to license the profession this year) and it is not clear whether or not they
will be able to treat the skin as well as muscle.
Plus, the area that a massage therapist occupies is not considered part
of a salon and does not get inspected by any state board.
Other examples include barbers cannot wax and cosmetologists cannot shave
a client. If you are in doubt, ask
what type of license is held by the person working on you.
It should be displayed in a public area of the salon.
Manicures and pedicures have been in
the news for causing infections, not just recently, but going back years. Montana
is taking steps to prevent this from happening in our state.
Soon all pedicure areas will be required to keep a cleaning log in
In order to keep yourself and other
healthy, do not go in for services if you are sick, and the person servicing you
will stay home if he or she is sick.
